PTO Committee Descriptions and Chairs - 2008/2009

 

Art at Ray Together

Chair Neely McNulty
Description The A.R.T. Committee has two major purposes including art history research, developing training materials, training docents, and arranging a spring gallery exhibit featuring an artist selected by the faculty. In addition, the committee maintains the art print collection at the Ray School. Volunteers are needed primarily during the spring.

 

Birthday Book Club

Chair

Joan Frankenstein-Mitchell

Description

This committee helps students and their families choose an appropriate book purchase for the school library in honor of their child’s birthday. Volunteers are needed for book covering and book choosing throughout the year, primarily on Thursday mornings.

Book Covering is needed to get the books "ready" for the library. Whenever new books are purchased, they need to be stamped, labeled, and covered according to library guidelines. Covering can be done at one’s own convenience when needed. Approximate commitment is 4 to 6 times per year for 1 to 2 hours per session.

Book Choosing Assistant is needed on Thursday morning from 8:00 to 8:30 am to help children select their birthday books. The schedule is made up ahead of time and frequency is approximately once per month.

 

Bus Monitor

Description

This committee organizes the bus monitors for the first day of school and facilitates communications between the bus company, parents, and the school concerning bus routes, safety, and other transportation issues. Volunteers are needed just prior to the beginning of the school year and the first day of school to ride the bus.

 

Differences and Disabilities

Description

This committee offers support for families and friends of children with differences and disabilities.  Periodic meetings are open to anyone, with meeting topics varying depending upon the desires of its members.

 

Directory

Description

Every fall the PTO distributes a school directory to Ray School PTO members. Each child is listed in his/her classroom. A whole school list is also provided in the back of the directory. People are needed to help proofread the directory and distribute directories to students through teacher mailboxes.

 

Fifth Grade Memory Book

Description

This committee prepares a 5th Grade Memory Book to be distributed at the end of the year to all 5th grade students. Volunteers are needed to help with layout, content, and assembly of the book.

 

Grants

Description

This committee awards staff grants in support of student educational programs, financing items that are not funded in the school budget. Members of the staff and parents may submit proposals twice a year (spring and fall) to the Grants Committee who then award PTO funds and/or make recommendations to the Hanover School Board.

 

Haven Helpers

Description

Haven Helpers is a community service program offering students the opportunity to give back to the greater community.   The program focuses on assisting The Upper Valley Haven, a local agency that provides residential and support services.  Volunteers will help lead food and clothing drives and may participate in offering child care at the Haven.

 

Kindergarten

Description

This committee assists new children and their families in the transition into the kindergarten program. Volunteers help the K-1 staff coordinate the Kindergarten Open House and registration day.

 

Membership

Description

This committee is responsible for encouraging all Ray School families and staff to join and participate in the PTO.  They collect all incoming PTO funds and maintain committee membership as well as assist members in finding their fit within the organization.  Volunteers are needed to help fill orders and deliver items ordered by members.  The membership drive is held once a year in the fall, and there are ongoing efforts throughout the year.

 

Newcomers

Chair Carmen Sedlacek
Description

This committee helps new families integrate into the Ray School community.  Events include Ice Cream Social, Welcome letter, Newcomers Coffee, “Host A Family,” and special activities for new students.  Families are needed to participate in the "Host A Family" program. The committee begins in late July and is ongoing throughout the year.

Teacher Appreciation

Chair Frieda Meehan
Description

The Ray School PTO is proud, supportive and "appreciative" of the staff, and to show our appreciation we sponsor various events throughout the year.  Events include a welcome back lunch during the week before school starts, updating the staff photos on the staff photo tree, a staff Halloween Treat and Valentine’s Day surprise, secretary appreciation day and a spring staff appreciation breakfast. Volunteers are needed for all events, ongoing throughout the year.

 

Transportation

This committee started in the spring of 2008 to help improve the bus system at the Ray School, as well as to encourage biking and walking to school. More info

This committee publishes information about PTO programs, events, and projects via this web site. It also assists with the Ray School web site, and with student training in web design. If you have any web expertise and can help us improve the site, please let us know.
